this is most likely because the mastodon server of the user you wish to follow has a/this https checking feature enabled.

Happened again this morning, now when in 'home'. So then I copy the message to 'profile' and it works.

GnuSocial comes with its own version of php-pear (in extlib). You want to use that version, so try apt purge php-pear. Unless that causes conflicts with other sites or applications.
