Anytime I try to follow someone on mastodon, I get an Internal Server Error with the following helpful information: An unknown error occurred.

My procedure: I click the + next to my "Following" list. I paste in a masto user. GS finds them, I click "Confirm," I get this error.

This issue has persisted across two installs on two different servers.

Hi! Are you using a 2.+ version? If that's the case, can you follow other AP accounts, such as Pleroma?

I am using v2, yes. I had not tried to follow a pleroma user, but I was able to follow a Pleroma account successfully, so that is working. I have tried several mastodon instances and users, and have not had any luck as of yet.

Then maybe you should enable debug logs and paste here the results of trying to follow a mastodon account, so hopefully someone will know what is happening.

this is most likely because the mastodon server of the user you wish to follow has a/this https checking feature enabled.

Do we have a seperate issue to cover implementation of http signatures?

This was fixed in v3... I think I'll try to port some v3 fixes down to v2...
