It might be necessary in case of bricked ROM to do some mods on the mainboard to make external 3v3 (for flashing a known good ROM with SPI flasher) safe. also resistors on data lines like 50-100ohm
mod is: cut +3.3v to both SPI chips, and jump the cuts using a diode. check schematics/boardview for how to do this cleanly. the diode, plus resistors on data lines, will probably make external power safe (and this can be checked using a multi-meter. i.e. check afterwards where the external power has continuity with on the x230 mainboard; make sure it only has continuity with vcc pins on spi chip and (via the resistors) to wp/hold pins on the spi chips.
