The 4mb and the 8mb files are used for external flashing. No readout from anything preinstalled on any spi chip required and most important - no need to run manualy me_cleaner or remove the write protection in the IFD.
The 12mb file can be flashed later for updates or when for example jumping between heads(maximized-images)<->retroboot.
I have seen https://notabug.org/retroboot/retroboot/commit/ffeed3b666c69d67e48c844c5de00259d76c2b1c
Could instead the build be made like in the heads project? It would make i think more sense.
1. The full 12mb image that have to be flashed later for updates with flashrom -p internal. Example: https://727-103208611-gh.circle-artifacts.com/0/build/x230-maximized/heads-x230-maximized-v0.2.0-987-gf39d103.rom
2. The "top" file that is 4mb (its clear that it have to be flashed to the 4mb spi chip. Example: https://727-103208611-gh.circle-artifacts.com/0/build/x230-maximized/heads-x230-maximized-v0.2.0-987-gf39d103-top.rom
3. The "bottom" file that is 8mb (its clear that it have to be flashed to the 8mb spi chip. Example: https://727-103208611-gh.circle-artifacts.com/0/build/x230-maximized/heads-x230-maximized-v0.2.0-987-gf39d103-bottom.rom

yes, that's the plan. full 12MiB X230 image with 100KiB truncated ME (currently the docs say to just run me_cleaner, without truncate, thus still use the 7MiB region only).
I plan to add linuxboot payload to retroboot, on targets where this is feasible. such as x230
retroboot will offer the same features as heads when i do this

Would be nice if the Intel ME can be extracted from the lenovo downloadable image and not from a existing device.
Thanks. I am waiting for the first releases for testing those images.
