  5. Lance of death & strategy
  6. -------------------------
  7. In Larn, the basic strategy was to get enough money to buy a Lance of Death,
  8. usually by getting to dungeon level 10, killing or getting around the demon
  9. lord, and getting and then selling the Eye of Larn. This would usually get
  10. you enough money to buy the Lance from the dnd store. You could then go into
  11. the volcano and kill everything in sight with one hit from the Lance.
  12. Well, the Lance is still deadly to all monsters. Demons, on the other hand,
  13. are merely tickled. And there are a LOT more demons (and relatives) in ULarn
  14. than in Larn.
  15. Dungeon and Volcano levels
  16. --------------------------
  17. There are 15 levels in the Dungeon, and 5 in the Volcano.
  18. Larn had 10 and 3, respectively.
  19. Levels 11 - 15 of the Dungeon contain:
  20. - Level 11: 1 demonlord
  21. - Level 12: 2 demonlords
  22. - Level 13: 3 demonlords
  23. - Level 14: 4 demonlords
  24. - Level 15: 5 demonlords
  25. + 1 demonprince guarding the Eye of Larn.
  26. - Levels 1 - 5 of the Volcano contain:
  27. - level 1: 1 demonprince
  28. - level 2: 2 demonprinces
  29. - level 3: 3 demonprinces
  30. - level 4: 4 demonprinces
  31. - level 5: 5 demonprinces
  32. + 1 God of Hellfire guarding the Potion of Cure Dianthroritis.
  33. In addition, there are no stairs from level 3 to 4, or from 4 to 5. The only
  34. way to go down is via a pit or trap door. There is guaranteed at least 1
  35. bottomless pit and bottomless trap door on level 5. The rock on levels 3, 4,
  36. and 5 cannot be destroyed via a vaporize rock spell, or in any other way.
  37. Magic Items
  38. -----------
  39. There is 1 of each of the following magic items in the game:
  40. Eye of Larn:
  41. The Eye now has a very beneficial magic property. If you are carrying the
  42. Eye, demonlords, demon princes, and the God of Hellfire are visible to you.
  43. Otherwise, they are invisible. They will show as follows:

  50. V DemonLord 5

  55. Sword of Slashing:
  56. The sword of slashing is quite strong and light, and is impervious to rust.
  57. Bessman's Flailing Hammer:
  58. The Hammer is the strongest weapon in the game (excluding the lance of
  59. death). It lowers your intelligence by 10, but raises your dexterity and
  60. strength by 10.
  61. Orb of Enlightenment:
  62. Carrying the Orb gives permanent expanded awareness.
  63. Orb of Dragon Slaying:
  64. Causes attacks against dragons to be much more effective.
  65. Scarab of Negate Spirit:
  66. Spirit Nagas and Poltergeists damage is halved if you have the scarab of
  67. negate spirit.
  68. Amulet of Invisibility:
  69. Causes the 'inv' spell to last much longer.
  70. Cube of Undead Control:
  71. Vampires, Wraiths, and Zombies damage is halved you have the cube of undead
  72. control. In addition, they can perform no special attacks upon you, like
  73. draining your experience level.
  74. Device of Theft Prevention:
  75. If you have this, Nymphs and Disenchantresses cannot steal from you.
  76. Brass Lamp:
  77. A genie lives in the brass lamp. If you are lucky, by rubbing the lamp, the
  78. genie will grant you a spell. Be warned though, the genie does not usually
  79. like to be disturbed, and may react unpleasantly. If the genie disappears
  80. (along with the lamp) without granting you a wish, it is still possible to
  81. find him again. But if you are granted a wish, the genie will not wish to be
  82. disturbed again (you only get one wish).
  83. Hand of Fear:
  84. Causes the scare monster spell to last much longer.
  85. Talisman of the Sphere:
  86. Normally, demons can dispel spheres of annihilation, disenchantresses can
  87. cancel them, and if you have the spell 'cancel' cast, that may cancel the
  88. sphere too. You can also die by touching the sphere.
  89. arrying the talisman revokes all of the above
  90. Wand of Wonder:
  91. You will not fall down any pits or trap doors if you are carrying the wand
  92. of wonder.
  93. Staff of Power:
  94. Carrying the staff of power will cancel any attack by a demonlord,
  95. demonprince, wraith, or vampire 75% of the time.
  96. Slayer:
  97. Demonlords and demonprinces attacks are halved if you are carrying the sword
  98. Slayer. Slayer essentially acts as a lance of death, but only against
  99. demons. It is otherwise a good strong weapon against other monsters. You
  100. will only find Slayer somewhere below dungeon level 10, or in the volcano.
  101. Elven Chain:
  102. Strong and light, impervious to rust.
  103. New spells
  104. ----------
  105. I've added a 'make wall' spell, that creates a wall in the place you
  106. specify. The code is 'mkw'.
  107. Elevators
  108. ---------
  109. Watch out for express elevators. They can be good or bad, depending on which
  110. direction they go (up or down).
  111. Other Notes
  112. -----------
  113. * NEVER NEVER cast 'vpr' when you are next to an altar!
  114. * Interesting things may happen when you sit on a dead throne.
