Improve code quality sufficiently to make a first alpha release

I've started cleaning up the whole thing (branch poc/meta) and plan to have it up and running later this year.

The project started out as a quick and dirty script for the commandline. It has become clear that the required functionality is too complex for this to be sustainable. I'm refactoring it into a proper object-oriented application.
