With a gnusocial account that doesn't subscribe to an account on mastodon it is not possible to repeat, fav, or reply to a notice of this mastodon account.
Looking up the the notice, clicking on "repeat" opens a pop-up that asks to sign in (I). Doing that, one is forwarded to a GS pop-up that asks to "continue" (II). From here on everything stops and it is not possible to repeat, fav, or reply.
The same is no issue from a mastodon account that doesn't subscribe to the account in question. After being asked to sign in to interact (III), one is forwarded to the respective pop-up in which the desired action can be accomplished (IV).
So I guess this is a gnusocial thing under ActiviyPub. Could this be fixed on the gnusocial side?

Thank you, weex, for pointing to #241. It indeed is this issue. And Diogo Cordeiro replies that it is already planned to be incorporated in v3 of GNU Social.
