  1. EMBOSS is "The European Molecular Biology Open Software Suite".
  2. EMBOSS is a free Open Source software analysis package specially
  3. developed for the needs of the molecular biology (e.g. EMBnet) user
  4. community. The software automatically copes with data in a variety of
  5. formats and even allows transparent retrieval of sequence data from
  6. the web. Also, as extensive libraries are provided with the package,
  7. it is a platform to allow other scientists to develop and release
  8. software in true open source spirit. EMBOSS also integrates a range of
  9. currently available packages and tools for sequence analysis into a
  10. seamless whole. EMBOSS breaks the historical trend towards commercial
  11. software packages.
  12. Within EMBOSS you will find around hundreds of programs (applications)
  13. covering areas such as:
  14. - Sequence alignment
  15. - Rapid database searching with sequence patterns
  16. - Protein motif identification, including domain analysis
  17. - Nucleotide sequence pattern analysis -- for example to identify CpG
  18. islands or repeats
  19. - Codon usage analysis for small genomes
  20. - Rapid identification of sequence patterns in large scale sequence
  21. sets
  22. - Presentation tools for publication
  23. Optional, run-time dependencies are clustalw and primer3 -- needed if
  24. you want to use the wrappers emma and eprimer32.
