  1. ; Welcome to the game of VLarn. At this moment, you face a great problem.
  2. Your daughter has contracted a strange disease and none of your home remedies
  3. seems to have any effect. You sense that she is in mortal danger and you must

  5. Perhaps here is the solution you need.
  6. It has been said that there once was a great magician who called himself
  7. Polinneaus. Many years ago, after having many miraculous successes, Polinneaus
  8. retired to the caverns of VLarn, where he devoted most of his time to the
  9. creation of magic. Rumors have it that one day Polinneaus set out to dispel
  10. an attacking army in a forest some distance to the north. It is believed that
  11. there he met his demise.
  12. The caverns of VLarn, it is thought, must be magnificent in design
  13. and contain much magic and treasure. One option you have is to undertake a
  14. journey into these caverns.
  15. Good Luck! (You're going to need it.)

  199. ^[[7mExplanation of the VLarn scoreboard facility^[[m
  200. VLarn supports TWO scoreboards, one for winners, and one for deceased
  201. characters. Each player is allowed one slot on each scoreboard, if the score
  202. is in the top ten for that scoreboard. This design helps ensure that frequent
  203. players of VLarn do not hog the scoreboard and gives more players a chance
  204. for glory. Level of difficulty is also noted on the scoreboards and this
  205. takes precedence over score for determining what entry is on the scoreboard.
  206. For example: if "Satyr, the VLarn God" has a score of 128003 on the scoreboard
  207. at diff 0, then his game at diff 1 and a score of 4112 would replace his
  208. previous entry on the scoreboard. Note that when a player dies, his inventory
  209. is stored in the scoreboard so that everyone can see what items the player had
  210. at the time of his death.
  211. VLarn began as Ularn by Phil Cordier, in 1987, at U.C.S.C.,
  212. based on Noah Morgan's Larn, with James McNamara's patches.
  213. Updated by David Richerby, Josh Brandt, Josh Bressers, and
  214. Jeff Johnson, with significant refactoring by Julian Olds.
