  47. .SH DESCRIPTION
  48. .sp
  49. Changed in version 1.27.0: The default location of the configuration and database directory on
  50. Unix\-like systems was changed to \fB$XDG_STATE_HOME/syncthing\fP or
  51. \fB$HOME/.local/state/syncthing\fP\&. Previously the default config location
  52. was \fB$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/syncthing\fP or \fB$HOME/.config/syncthing\fP\&. The
  53. database directory was previously \fB$HOME/.config/syncthing\fP or, if the
  54. environment variable was set, \fB$XDG_DATA_HOME/syncthing\fP\&. Existing
  55. installations may still use these directories instead of the newer
  56. defaults.
  57. .sp
  58. New in version 1.5.0: Database and config can now be set separately. Previously the database was
  59. always located in the same directory as the config.
  60. .sp
  61. Syncthing uses a single directory to store configuration and crypto keys.
  62. Syncthing also keeps an index database with file metadata which is by
  63. default stored in the same directory, though this can be overridden.
  64. .sp
  65. The location defaults to \fB$XDG_STATE_HOME/syncthing\fP or
  66. \fB$HOME/.local/state/syncthing\fP (Unix\-like), \fB$HOME/Library/Application
  67. Support/Syncthing\fP (Mac), or \fB%LOCALAPPDATA%\eSyncthing\fP (Windows). It can
  68. be changed at runtime using the \fB\-\-config\fP or \fB\-\-home\fP flags or the
  69. corresponding environment variables (\fB$STCONFDIR\fP or \fBSTHOMEDIR\fP). The
  70. following files are located in this directory:
  71. .INDENT 0.0
  72. .TP
  73. .B \fBconfig.xml\fP
  74. The configuration file, in XML format.
  75. .TP
  76. .B \fBcert.pem\fP, \fBkey.pem\fP
  77. The device’s ECDSA public and private key. These form the basis for the
  78. device ID. The key must be kept private.
  79. .TP
  80. .B \fBhttps\-cert.pem\fP, \fBhttps\-key.pem\fP
  81. The certificate and key for HTTPS GUI connections. These may be replaced
  82. with a custom certificate for HTTPS as desired.
  83. .UNINDENT
  84. .sp
  85. The database is by default stored in the same directory as the config, but
  86. the location may be overridden by the \fB\-\-data\fP or \fB\-\-home\fP flags or the
  87. corresponding environment varibles (\fB$STDATADIR\fP or \fBSTHOMEDIR\fP).
  88. .sp
  89. The database directory contains the following files, among others:
  90. .INDENT 0.0
  91. .TP
  92. .B \fBindex\-\fP\fI*\fP\fB\&.db\fP
  93. A directory holding the database with metadata and hashes of the files
  94. currently on disk and available from peers.
  95. .TP
  96. .B \fBsyncthing.log\fP
  97. Log output, on some systems.
  98. .TP
  99. .B \fBaudit\-\fP\fI*\fP\fB\&.log\fP
  100. Audit log data, when enabled.
  101. .TP
  102. .B \fBpanic\-\fP\fI*\fP\fB\&.log\fP
  103. Crash log data, when required.

  105. .SH CONFIG FILE FORMAT
  106. .sp
  107. The following shows an example of a default configuration file (IDs will differ):
  108. .sp
  109. \fBNOTE:\fP
  110. .INDENT 0.0
  111. .INDENT 3.5
  112. The config examples are present for illustration. Do \fBnot\fP copy them
  113. entirely to use as your config. They are likely out\-of\-date and the values
  114. may no longer correspond to the defaults.

  377. .B label
  378. The label of a folder is a human readable and descriptive local name. May
  379. be different on each device, empty, and/or identical to other folder
  380. labels. (optional)
  381. .UNINDENT
  382. .INDENT 0.0
  383. .TP
  384. .B filesystemType

  388. .INDENT 0.0
  389. .TP
  390. .B path (mandatory)
  391. The path to the directory where the folder is stored on this
  392. device; not sent to other devices.
  393. .UNINDENT
  394. .INDENT 0.0
  395. .TP
  396. .B type
  397. Controls how the folder is handled by Syncthing. Possible values are:
  398. .INDENT 7.0
  399. .TP
  400. .B \fBsendreceive\fP
  401. The folder is in default mode. Sending local and accepting remote changes.
  402. Note that this type was previously called “readwrite” which is deprecated
  403. but still accepted in incoming configs.
  404. .TP
  405. .B \fBsendonly\fP
  406. The folder is in “send only” mode – it will not be modified by
  407. Syncthing on this device.
  408. Note that this type was previously called “readonly” which is deprecated
  409. but still accepted in incoming configs.
  410. .TP
  411. .B \fBreceiveonly\fP
  412. The folder is in “receive only” mode – it will not propagate
  413. changes to other devices.
  414. .TP
  415. .B \fBreceiveencrypted\fP
  416. Must be used on untrusted devices, where the data cannot be decrypted
  417. because no folder password was entered. See \fI\%Untrusted (Encrypted) Devices\fP\&.
  418. .UNINDENT
  419. .UNINDENT
  420. .INDENT 0.0
  421. .TP
  422. .B rescanIntervalS
  423. The rescan interval, in seconds. Can be set to \fB0\fP to disable when external
  424. plugins are used to trigger rescans.
  425. .UNINDENT
  426. .INDENT 0.0
  427. .TP
  428. .B fsWatcherEnabled
  429. If set to \fBtrue\fP, this detects changes to files in the folder and scans them.
  430. .UNINDENT
  431. .INDENT 0.0
  432. .TP
  433. .B fsWatcherDelayS
  434. The duration during which changes detected are accumulated, before a scan is
  435. scheduled (only takes effect if \fI\%fsWatcherEnabled\fP is set to \fBtrue\fP).
  436. .UNINDENT
  437. .INDENT 0.0
  438. .TP
  439. .B ignorePerms
  440. If \fBtrue\fP, files originating from this folder will be announced to remote
  441. devices with the “no permission bits” flag. The remote devices will use
  442. whatever their default permission setting is when creating the files. The
  443. primary use case is for file systems that do not support permissions, such
  444. as FAT, or environments where changing permissions is impossible.
  445. .UNINDENT
  446. .INDENT 0.0
  447. .TP
  448. .B autoNormalize
  449. Automatically correct UTF\-8 normalization errors found in file names. The
  450. mechanism and how to set it up is described in a \fI\%separate chapter\fP\&.
  451. .UNINDENT
  452. .sp
  453. The following child elements may exist:
  454. .INDENT 0.0
  455. .TP
  456. .B device
  457. These must have the \fBid\fP attribute and can have an \fBintroducedBy\fP
  458. attribute, identifying the device that introduced us to share this folder
  459. with the given device. If the original introducer unshares this folder with
  460. this device, our device will follow and unshare the folder (subject to
  461. \fI\%skipIntroductionRemovals\fP being \fBfalse\fP on the introducer device).
  462. .sp
  463. All mentioned devices are those that will be sharing the folder in question.
  464. Each mentioned device must have a separate \fBdevice\fP element later in the file.
  465. It is customary that the local device ID is included in all folders.
  466. Syncthing will currently add this automatically if it is not present in
  467. the configuration file.
  468. .sp
  469. The \fBencryptionPassword\fP sub\-element contains the secret needed to decrypt
  470. this folder’s data on the remote device. If left empty, the data is plainly
  471. accessible (but still protected by the transport encryption). The mechanism
  472. and how to set it up is described in a \fI\%separate chapter\fP\&.
  473. .UNINDENT
  474. .INDENT 0.0
  475. .TP
  476. .B minDiskFree
  477. The minimum required free space that should be available on the disk this
  478. folder resides. The folder will be stopped when the value drops below the
  479. threshold. The element content is interpreted according to the given
  480. \fBunit\fP attribute. Accepted \fBunit\fP values are \fB%\fP (percent of the disk
  481. / volume size), \fBkB\fP, \fBMB\fP, \fBGB\fP and \fBTB\fP\&. Set to zero to disable.

  513. .TP
  514. .B order
  515. The order in which needed files should be pulled from the cluster. It has
  516. no effect when the folder type is “send only”. The possibles values are:
  517. .INDENT 7.0
  518. .TP
  519. .B \fBrandom\fP (default)
  520. Pull files in random order. This optimizes for balancing resources among
  521. the devices in a cluster.
  522. .TP
  523. .B \fBalphabetic\fP
  524. Pull files ordered by file name alphabetically.
  525. .TP

  1061. New in version 1.26.0.
  1062. .sp
1063. Prior to version 1.26.0 the GUI used HTTP Basic Authorization for login, but
1064. starting in version 1.26.0 it uses an HTML form by default. Basic
1065. Authorization is still supported when the \fBAuthorization\fP request header
1066. is present in a request, but some browsers don’t send the header unless
  1067. prompted by a 401 response.
  1068. .sp
1069. When this setting is enabled, the GUI will respond to unauthenticated
1070. requests with a 401 response prompting for Basic Authorization, so that
1071. \fBhttps://user:pass@localhost\fP style URLs continue to work in standard
1072. browsers. Other clients that always send the \fBAuthorization\fP request
1073. header do not need this setting.
  1074. .sp
1075. When this setting is disabled, the GUI will not send 401 responses so users
1076. won’t see browser popups prompting for username and password.

1634. If you want Syncthing to listen on multiple addresses, you can either: add
1635. multiple \fB<listenAddress>\fP tags in the configuration file or enter several
1636. addresses separated by commas in the GUI.

  1655. .B TCP IPv6 wildcard and port (\fBtcp6://[::]:22000\fP, \fBtcp6://:22000\fP)
1656. These are equivalent and will result in Syncthing listening on all

  1689. .SH SYNCING CONFIGURATION FILES
  1690. .sp
1691. Syncing configuration files between devices (such that multiple devices are
1692. using the same configuration files) can cause issues. This is easy to do
1693. accidentally if you sync your home folder between devices. A common symptom
1694. of syncing configuration files is two devices ending up with the same Device ID.
  1695. .sp
1696. If you want to use Syncthing to backup your configuration files, it is recommended
1697. that the files you are backing up are in a \fI\%Send Only Folder\fP to prevent other
1698. devices from overwriting the per device configuration. The folder on the remote
1699. device(s) should not be used as configuration for the remote devices.
  1700. .sp
1701. If you’d like to sync your home folder in non\-send only mode, you may add the
1702. folder that stores the configuration files to the \fI\%ignore list\fP\&.
1703. If you’d also like to backup your configuration files, add another folder in
1704. send only mode for just the configuration folder.
