  8. <LI><B>GNU Emacs 19 is Released!</B>
  9. <P>
  10. GNU Emacs 19 has just been released for beta-testing. Unlike some other
  11. recent derivations of Emacs, GNU Emacs 19's support for character-only
  12. terminals continues to improve along with its much improved support for
  13. bitmapped displays running the X Window System. Other new features
  14. include support for European character sets and floating point numbers,
  15. as well as source-level debugging of Emacs Lisp programs. See "Project
  16. GNU Status Report" and "Contents of the Emacs Tape" for more details.

  19. <B>GCC 2 is out of beta test</B>
  20. <P>
  21. As of version 2.4.1, the GNU C Compiler version 2 is out of beta test.

  25. <P>
  26. The new <CITE>GNU Emacs Manual</CITE>, 8th edition, (updated for Emacs 19) and

  31. Because of its size, <B>MIT C Scheme</B> is now on a separate tape. See

  36. <CODE>p2c</CODE>, <B>DejaGnu</B>, <B>Tile Forth</B>, and the standalone GNU

  40. <LI><B>Taylor UUCP Now a Full-Fledged Replacement for Unix UUCP</B>

  42. Ian Taylor, author of Taylor UUCP, has added the final pieces for it to
  43. be a complete free replacement for Unix UUCP. It's on the Utilities
  44. Tape.

  46. <LI><B>New Programs on the Utilities Tape</B>

  48. <CODE>acm</CODE>, <CODE>dc</CODE>, <CODE>doschk</CODE>, <CODE>es</CODE>, <B>Gnats</B>, <CODE>rc</CODE>,

  63. <LI><B>Objective C Runtime System Funded</B>
  64. <P>
  65. Kresten Krab Thorup, author of the Objective C runtime system,
  66. has been hired as a part-time programmer for six months by the
  67. Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at
  68. Aalbord University, Denmark. His work will serve to define the
  69. most portable and extensible tools and libraries for this dynamic and
  70. popular object-oriented language.

  72. <LI><B>Dell Adopts GNU CC for Controller Software</B>
  73. <P>
  74. Dell has adopted GCC for the development of new controller software.
  75. Dell already uses GCC to build SVR4, and like Commodore quotes improved
  76. performance. Other systems based on GCC are 4.4BSD, NetBSD, 386BSD,
  77. BSDI, Linux, and many Mach ports including OSF/1's reference ports,
  78. NeXT, and DG/UX.
  79. SGI now ships GNU <CODE>cpp</CODE> with their C compiler.

  81. <LI><B>Free Widget Foundation Announces Widgets</B>
  82. <P>
  83. The Free Widget Foundation (FWF) is
  84. volunteer effort to create a set of powerful, flexible,
  85. freely-accessible X graphical user-interface modules (widgets).
  86. The FWF is not related to the Free Software Foundation, but shares our
  87. goal of making high-quality software freely redistributable.
