  12. @c included in 'gnus.texi'. 'GNUS-NEWS' is automatically generated from
  13. @c this file (see 'gnus-news.el').
  14. @itemize @bullet
  15. @item Supported Emacs versions
  16. The following Emacs versions are supported by No Gnus:
  17. @itemize @bullet
  18. @item Emacs 22 and up
  19. @item XEmacs 21.4
  20. @item XEmacs 21.5
  21. @item SXEmacs
  22. @end itemize
  23. @item Installation changes
  24. @itemize @bullet
  25. @item Upgrading from previous (stable) version if you have used No Gnus.
  26. If you have tried No Gnus (the unstable Gnus branch leading to this
  27. release) but went back to a stable version, be careful when upgrading
  28. to this version. In particular, you will probably want to remove the
  29. @file{~/News/marks} directory (perhaps selectively), so that flags are
  30. read from your @file{~/.newsrc.eld} instead of from the stale marks
  31. file, where this release will store flags for nntp. See a later entry
  32. for more information about nntp marks. Note that downgrading isn't
  33. safe in general.
  34. @item Incompatibility when switching from Emacs 23 to Emacs 22
  35. In Emacs 23, Gnus uses Emacs's new internal coding system @code{utf-8-emacs}
  36. for saving articles drafts and @file{~/.newsrc.eld}. These files may not
  37. be read correctly in Emacs 22 and below. If you want to use Gnus across
  38. different Emacs versions, you may set @code{mm-auto-save-coding-system}
  39. to @code{emacs-mule}.
  40. @c FIXME: Untested. (Or did anyone test it?)
  41. @c Cf. http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.gnus.general/66251/focus=66344
  42. @item Lisp files are now installed in @file{.../site-lisp/gnus/} by default.
  43. It defaulted to @file{.../site-lisp/} formerly. In addition to this,
  44. the new installer issues a warning if other Gnus installations which
  45. will shadow the latest one are detected. You can then remove those
  46. shadows manually or remove them using @code{make
  47. remove-installed-shadows}.
  48. @item The installation directory name is allowed to have spaces and/or tabs.
  49. @end itemize
  50. @item New packages and libraries within Gnus
  51. @itemize @bullet
  52. @item New version of @code{nnimap}
  53. @code{nnimap} has been reimplemented in a mostly-compatible way. See
  54. the Gnus manual for a description of the new interface. In
  55. particular, @code{nnimap-inbox} and the client side split method has
  56. changed.
  57. @item Gnus includes the Emacs Lisp @acronym{SASL} library.
  58. This provides a clean @acronym{API} to @acronym{SASL} mechanisms from
  59. within Emacs. The user visible aspects of this, compared to the earlier
  60. situation, include support for @acronym{DIGEST}-@acronym{MD5} and
  61. @acronym{NTLM}. @xref{Top, ,Emacs SASL, sasl, Emacs SASL}.
  62. @item ManageSieve connections uses the @acronym{SASL} library by default.
  63. The primary change this brings is support for @acronym{DIGEST-MD5} and
  64. @acronym{NTLM}, when the server supports it.
  65. @item Gnus includes a password cache mechanism in password.el.
  66. It is enabled by default (see @code{password-cache}), with a short
  67. timeout of 16 seconds (see @code{password-cache-expiry}). If
  68. @acronym{PGG} is used as the @acronym{PGP} back end, the @acronym{PGP}
  69. passphrase is managed by this mechanism. Passwords for ManageSieve
  70. connections are managed by this mechanism, after querying the user
  71. about whether to do so.
  72. @item Using EasyPG with Gnus
  73. When EasyPG, is available, Gnus will use it instead of @acronym{PGG}.
  74. EasyPG is an Emacs user interface to GNU Privacy Guard. @xref{Top,
  75. ,EasyPG Assistant user's manual, epa, EasyPG Assistant user's manual}.
  76. EasyPG is included in Emacs 23 and available separately as well.
  77. @end itemize
  78. @item Changes in group mode
  79. @c ************************
  80. @itemize @bullet
  81. @item
  82. Symbols like @code{gcc-self} now have the same precedence rules in
  83. @code{gnus-parameters} as other ``real'' variables: The last match
  84. wins instead of the first match.
  85. @item
  86. Old intermediate incoming mail files (@file{Incoming*}) are deleted
  87. after a couple of days, not immediately. @xref{Mail Source
  88. Customization}.
  89. (New in Gnus 5.10.10 / No Gnus 0.8)
  90. @c This entry is also present in the node "Oort Gnus".
  91. @end itemize
  92. @item Changes in summary and article mode
  93. @itemize @bullet
  94. @item There's now only one variable that determines how @acronym{HTML}
  95. is rendered: @code{mm-text-html-renderer}.
  96. @item Gnus now supports sticky article buffers. Those are article buffers
  97. that are not reused when you select another article. @xref{Sticky
  98. Articles}.
  99. @c @item Bookmarks
  100. @c FIXME: To be added
  101. @item Gnus can selectively display @samp{text/html} articles
  102. with a WWW browser with @kbd{K H}. @xref{MIME Commands}.
  103. @c gnus-registry-marks
  104. @c FIXME: To be added
  105. @item International host names (@acronym{IDNA}) can now be decoded
  106. inside article bodies using @kbd{W i}
  107. (@code{gnus-summary-idna-message}). This requires that GNU Libidn
  108. (@url{http://www.gnu.org/software/libidn/}) has been installed.
  109. @c FIXME: Also mention @code{message-use-idna}?
  110. @item The non-@acronym{ASCII} group names handling has been much
  111. improved. The back ends that fully support non-@acronym{ASCII} group
  112. names are now @code{nntp}, @code{nnml}, and @code{nnrss}. Also the
  113. agent, the cache, and the marks features work with those back ends.
  114. @xref{Non-ASCII Group Names}.
  115. @item Gnus now displays @acronym{DNS} master files sent as text/dns
  116. using dns-mode.
  117. @item Gnus supports new limiting commands in the Summary buffer:
  118. @kbd{/ r} (@code{gnus-summary-limit-to-replied}) and @kbd{/ R}
  119. (@code{gnus-summary-limit-to-recipient}). @xref{Limiting}.
  120. @item You can now fetch all ticked articles from the server using
  121. @kbd{Y t} (@code{gnus-summary-insert-ticked-articles}). @xref{Summary
  122. Generation Commands}.
  123. @item Gnus supports a new sort command in the Summary buffer:
  124. @kbd{C-c C-s C-t} (@code{gnus-summary-sort-by-recipient}). @xref{Summary
  125. Sorting}.
  126. @item @acronym{S/MIME} now features @acronym{LDAP} user certificate searches.
  127. You need to configure the server in @code{smime-ldap-host-list}.
  128. @item URLs inside Open@acronym{PGP} headers are retrieved and imported
  129. to your PGP key ring when you click on them.
  130. @item
  131. Picons can be displayed right from the textual address, see
  132. @code{gnus-picon-style}. @xref{Picons}.
  133. @item @acronym{ANSI} @acronym{SGR} control sequences can be transformed
  134. using @kbd{W A}.
  135. @acronym{ANSI} sequences are used in some Chinese hierarchies for
  136. highlighting articles (@code{gnus-article-treat-ansi-sequences}).
  137. @item Gnus now MIME decodes articles even when they lack "MIME-Version" header.
  138. This changes the default of @code{gnus-article-loose-mime}.
  139. @item @code{gnus-decay-scores} can be a regexp matching score files.
  140. For example, set it to @samp{\\.ADAPT\\'} and only adaptive score files
  141. will be decayed. @xref{Score Decays}.
  142. @item Strings prefixing to the @code{To} and @code{Newsgroup} headers in
  143. summary lines when using @code{gnus-ignored-from-addresses} can be
  144. customized with @code{gnus-summary-to-prefix} and
  145. @code{gnus-summary-newsgroup-prefix}. @xref{To From Newsgroups}.
  146. @item You can replace @acronym{MIME} parts with external bodies.
  147. See @code{gnus-mime-replace-part} and @code{gnus-article-replace-part}.
  148. @xref{MIME Commands}, @ref{Using MIME}.
  149. @item
  150. The option @code{mm-fill-flowed} can be used to disable treatment of
  151. format=flowed messages. Also, flowed text is disabled when sending
  152. inline @acronym{PGP} signed messages. @xref{Flowed text, ,Flowed text,
  153. emacs-mime, The Emacs MIME Manual}. (New in Gnus 5.10.7)
  154. @c This entry is also present in the node "Oort Gnus".
  155. @item Now the new command @kbd{S W}
  156. (@code{gnus-article-wide-reply-with-original}) for a wide reply in the
  157. article buffer yanks a text that is in the active region, if it is set,
  158. as well as the @kbd{R} (@code{gnus-article-reply-with-original}) command.
  159. Note that the @kbd{R} command in the article buffer no longer accepts a
  160. prefix argument, which was used to make it do a wide reply.
  161. @xref{Article Keymap}.
  162. @item The new command @kbd{C-h b}
  163. (@code{gnus-article-describe-bindings}) used in the article buffer now
  164. shows not only the article commands but also the real summary commands
  165. that are accessible from the article buffer.
  166. @end itemize
  167. @item Changes in Message mode
  168. @itemize @bullet
  169. @item Gnus now defaults to saving all outgoing messages in per-month
  170. nnfolder archives.
  171. @item Gnus now supports the ``hashcash'' client puzzle anti-spam mechanism.
  172. Use @code{(setq message-generate-hashcash t)} to enable.
  173. @xref{Hashcash}.
  174. @item You can now drag and drop attachments to the Message buffer.
  175. See @code{mml-dnd-protocol-alist} and @code{mml-dnd-attach-options}.
  176. @xref{MIME, ,MIME, message, Message Manual}.
  177. @item The option @code{message-yank-empty-prefix} now controls how
  178. empty lines are prefixed in cited text. @xref{Insertion Variables,
  179. ,Insertion Variables, message, Message Manual}.
  180. @item Gnus uses narrowing to hide headers in Message buffers.
  181. The @code{References} header is hidden by default. To make all
  182. headers visible, use @code{(setq message-hidden-headers nil)}.
  183. @xref{Message Headers, ,Message Headers, message, Message Manual}.
  184. @item You can highlight different levels of citations like in the
  185. article buffer. See @code{gnus-message-highlight-citation}.
  186. @item @code{auto-fill-mode} is enabled by default in Message mode.
  187. See @code{message-fill-column}. @xref{Various Message Variables, ,
  188. Message Headers, message, Message Manual}.
  189. @item You can now store signature files in a special directory
  190. named @code{message-signature-directory}.
  191. @item The option @code{message-citation-line-format} controls the format
  192. of the "Whomever writes:" line. You need to set
  193. @code{message-citation-line-function} to
  194. @code{message-insert-formatted-citation-line} as well.
  195. @end itemize
  196. @item Changes in Browse Server mode
  197. @itemize @bullet
  198. @item Gnus' sophisticated subscription methods are now available in
  199. Browse Server buffers as well using the variable
  200. @code{gnus-browse-subscribe-newsgroup-method}.
  201. @end itemize
  202. @item Changes in back ends
  203. @itemize @bullet
  204. @item The nntp back end stores article marks in @file{~/News/marks}.
  205. The directory can be changed using the (customizable) variable
  206. @code{nntp-marks-directory}, and marks can be disabled using the
  207. (back end) variable @code{nntp-marks-is-evil}. The advantage of this
  208. is that you can copy @file{~/News/marks} (using rsync, scp or
  209. whatever) to another Gnus installation, and it will realize what
  210. articles you have read and marked. The data in @file{~/News/marks}
  211. has priority over the same data in @file{~/.newsrc.eld}.
  212. @item
  213. You can import and export your @acronym{RSS} subscriptions from
  214. @acronym{OPML} files. @xref{RSS}.
  215. @item @acronym{IMAP} identity (@acronym{RFC} 2971) is supported.
  216. By default, Gnus does not send any information about itself, but you can
  217. customize it using the variable @code{nnimap-id}.
  218. @item The @code{nnrss} back end now supports multilingual text.
  219. Non-@acronym{ASCII} group names for the @code{nnrss} groups are also
  220. supported. @xref{RSS}.
  221. @item Retrieving mail with @acronym{POP3} is supported over @acronym{SSL}/@acronym{TLS} and with StartTLS.
  222. @item The nnml back end allows other compression programs beside @file{gzip}
  223. for compressed message files. @xref{Mail Spool}.
  224. @item The nnml back end supports group compaction.
  225. This feature, accessible via the functions
  226. @code{gnus-group-compact-group} (@kbd{G z} in the group buffer) and
  227. @code{gnus-server-compact-server} (@kbd{z} in the server buffer)
  228. renumbers all articles in a group, starting from 1 and removing gaps.
  229. As a consequence, you get a correct total article count (until
  230. messages are deleted again).
  231. @c @item nnmairix.el
  232. @c FIXME
  233. @c @item nnir.el
  234. @c FIXME
  235. @end itemize
  236. @item Appearance
  237. @c Maybe it's not worth to separate this from "Miscellaneous"?
  238. @itemize @bullet
  239. @item The tool bar has been updated to use GNOME icons.
  240. You can also customize the tool bars: @kbd{M-x customize-apropos RET
  241. -tool-bar$} should get you started. (Only for Emacs, not in XEmacs.)
  242. @c FIXME: Document this in the manual
  243. @item The tool bar icons are now (de)activated correctly
  244. in the group buffer, see the variable @code{gnus-group-update-tool-bar}.
  245. Its default value depends on your Emacs version.
  246. @c FIXME: Document this in the manual
  247. @item You can change the location of XEmacs's toolbars in Gnus buffers.
  248. See @code{gnus-use-toolbar} and @code{message-use-toolbar}.
  249. @end itemize
  250. @item Miscellaneous changes
  251. @itemize @bullet
  252. @item Having edited the select-method for the foreign server in the
  253. server buffer is immediately reflected to the subscription of the groups
  254. which use the server in question. For instance, if you change
  255. @code{nntp-via-address} into @samp{bar.example.com} from
  256. @samp{foo.example.com}, Gnus will connect to the news host by way of the
  257. intermediate host @samp{bar.example.com} from next time.
  258. @item The @file{all.SCORE} file can be edited from the group buffer
  259. using @kbd{W e}.
  260. @item You can set @code{gnus-mark-copied-or-moved-articles-as-expirable}
  261. to a non-@code{nil} value so that articles that have been read may be
  262. marked as expirable automatically when copying or moving them to a group
  263. that has auto-expire turned on. The default is @code{nil} and copying
  264. and moving of articles behave as before; i.e., the expirable marks will
  265. be unchanged except that the marks will be removed when copying or
  266. moving articles to a group that has not turned auto-expire on.
  267. @xref{Expiring Mail}.
  268. @item NoCeM support has been removed.
  269. @item Carpal mode has been removed.

  271. @end itemize
  272. @c gnus-news.texi ends here.
