12. Those of you who follow MediaGoblin closely likely know of Deb
13. Nicholson, our community manager. This post is a bit late, but
14. nonetheless, I wanted to share something exciting that happened:

29. That's right! Deb Nicholson won the O'Reilly Open Source Award, one
30. of the most recognized awards in the FLOSS world, for her work on
31. GNU MediaGoblin and OpenHatch. Here's the text of Deb's nomination:
32.

33.

34. Deb Nicholson has been a sparkplug for Linux and FOSS advocacy and
35. she can best be described as the traffic cop at the intersection of
36. technology and social justice. A free speech advocate, economic
37. justice organizer and civil liberties defender for years, Deb became
38. involved in the free software movement. She is the Community
39. Outreach Director at the Open Invention Network and the Community
40. Manager at MediaGoblin. She also serves on the board at Open Hatch,
41. a non-profit dedicated to matching prospective free software
42. contributors with communities, tools and education.
43.

44.
...as well as the message from the award announcement itself:

45.

46. Deb Nicholson works at the intersection of technology and social
47. justice. She became involved in the free software movement about
48. five years ago when she started working for the Free Software
49. Foundation. She is currently the Community Outreach Director for the
50. Open Invention Network and in her spare time, she serves on the
51. board of OpenHatch. Congratulations Deb!

64.
65.

66. Deb and I have known each other from when she used to work at the
67. Free Software Foundation and we became friends over time. I've
68. always been impressed with the tireless work Deb has put into making
69. the world of free software a better and friendlier place for
70. everyone, as well as her extensive knowledge gained from a long
71. history of social justice work. Early on in MediaGoblin starting up
72. as a project, I talked to Deb about it and asked if she'd be
73. interested in being involved. I'm glad I did... Deb has brought
74. much to the project and I constantly lean on her skills in writing,
75. her sharp wit, and her clear and regular guidance on how to build
76. MediaGoblin into a better community. MediaGoblin wouldn't be the
77. same place it is today without Deb working with us.
78.

79.

80. Deb, thanks for your work on MediaGoblin, OpenHatch, and so many
81. other things... and for being a great friend to myself and many
82. others in the MediaGoblin community! We're glad to have you here!
