  4. March is Women's History
  5. Month. Time to sit
  6. down and reflect on all the shit
  7. my ancestors went through
  8. so that I could be
  9. here today, collapsed in bed,
  10. distressed,
  11. wracked with anxiety,
  12. in desperate need to be exhumed
  13. from this disintegrating body.
  14. I'm forgetting my own herstory.
  15. Past entries in my journals
  16. are becoming letters from foreign countries,
  17. the other timelines where I am well,
  18. doing well,
  19. not at the bottom of a well.
  20. The other timelines where I am making things
  21. of worldwide importance,
  22. where on my childhood detractors
  23. I've gotten revenge.
  24. Not wishing I was a bird
  25. like those outside that now return
  26. in preparation for spring.
  27. It could have been so much worse.
  28. Straitjacket, locked up, never heard
  29. from again. Maybe lobotomized.
  30. How many geniuses have met their demise
  31. at the hands of a crude scalpel,
  32. I wonder? And I, here,
  33. how could I in this day or now convince
  34. the padded-wall jailers
  35. that the other soul that resides in me means well?
  36. "She has dominion over
  37. every part of me,
  38. but *noli timere*: I have no desire
  39. to harm my family."
  40. Who would lis-
  41. ten, not lock me up for ten
  42. days, weeks, months, years
  43. until I renounced this world within me so dear?
  44. Tell me, can you hear the screams
  45. from behind
  46. tied-
  47. on masks plastered with smiles
  48. for the crime
  49. of omitting domestic servitude from one's dreams?
  50. Can you feel on your hands the blood spilled
  51. from God's unwanted "blessing" that might instead kill
  52. when it comes to term, woman coming to terms
  53. that the Son who bled with promise to save
  54. won't give her better than wires with which to lacerate?
  55. Can you see how bright is
  56. the future we might have had
  57. if every woman brilliance
  58. was not snubbed out at every chance?
  59. The sheer weight
  60. is enough to make
  61. anyone go insane.
  62. I'm forgetting my own herstory.
  63. It seems some days
  64. that things have forever been this way,
  65. each day bleeding into the next,
  66. record on repeat.
  67. The slightest bit of thawing heat
  68. feels like a bitter attack:
  69. how dare I be reminded that
  70. this isn't all I've ever had.
  71. How dare anything have the audacity to remind
  72. that one day I won't anymore be able to hide.
  73. There will come a day when the sky
  74. breaks and lets in cleansing sunshine.
  75. And I'll have to look my mother in the face.
  76. And I'll have to tell her that when I die
  77. I'm going to a completely different place
  78. than Heaven or Hell.
  79. I'm going to remember the hell
  80. that the men of all history have inflicted
  81. and make a new world where to be what I am
  82. is not a sin, not gravely iniquitous.
  83. And she'll have to confer with Father and decide
  84. if what I've done
  85. is grave enough
  86. to warrant the psych ward's involuntary hold.
  87. This is my birthright as a female, isn't it?
  88. The padded room's blistering cold.
