30.

 31.

 32.
Anglo-Saxon rune poem:

 33.
Eþel byþ oferleof æghwylcum men,
gif he mot ðær rihtes and gerysena on
brucan on bolde bleadum oftast.

 34.
An estate is very dear to every man,
if he can enjoy there in his house
whatever is right and proper in constant prosperity.

 35.
There is not a Norwegian rune poem for Othala.

 36.
A modern poem:

 37.

 38.
I fear I am being driven mad
39. by forces I do not understand,
40. have no hopes of coming to terms with,
41. much less explaining to kin and kith
42. this world that I belong to,
43. these spirits I must be in league with.

 44.
For this is
45. the inheritance
46. of my blood,
47. this homeland I carry everywhere I go
48. and cannot ever hope to escape from.
49. These three errant and conflicting strains
50. each with its own legitimate claim
51. over my body, my heart, my soul.

 52.
There's a fourth that dormant within me resides,
53. but it hasn't reared its head in a very long time.
54. Neither do I miss it, no blessing it could give
55. but instead the curse of a biological imperative
56. that I would sooner from me excise.

 57.
Unlike my siblings of lives long gone by,
58. I do not accept that it is my duty
59. to create a world and in the process die.
60. What is the point, if at the end,
61. I am not still living?
62. What is the point of fulfilling it when,
63. if I perished in the process, you could never be happy?

 64.
If one of them could awake from oblivion
65. and on this gnarly life of mine pass judgment,
66. what would they say?

 67.
"How well you retained a sense of individuality.
68. Tell me, Lethe, would you consider yourself among the happy?
69. Was it worth the sleepless nights, the gut twists, the migraines,
70. all to your duty as a Meridian abdicate?"

 71.
And to that, I would take my lover's hand
72. and whisper, "Yes, I think the aches
73. in my bones will be worth the wait.
74. Maybe you never knew this, sibling.
75. Maybe you never understood
76. homes don't have to be built by sacrifice
77. and I don't think they should.
78. I don't know what gave birth to me
79. or if of life they'd still think me worthy,
80. but I care not. My lover
81. is the only standard
82. I recognize,
83. and this new world built by these
84. hands of mine
85. the only homeland."
