Slackware Update-Notifier

ATTENTION: Please read about the security concerns of using random scripts from the internet

Update-notifier for Slackware Linux. This script was made to offer an easy way of getting informed about updates.

This script was tested with:

  • Slackware64 14.1
  • bash-4.2.045
  • xorg-server-1.14.3
  • wget-1.14
  • fluxbox-1.3.5
  • xfce4-notifyd-0.2.4

1 - HOW TO USE

The script has to be run AS USER (or at least as the same user, your DE/WM is running) in order to work properly.

  • Move these files into your home-directory (preferebly into "~/.slack-updater/") and edit them, if needed.
  • Make sure, there is an update-mirror selected in "/etc/slackpkg/mirrors". If not uncommented one of these.
  • Run the script once, in order to download the latest ChangeLog.
  • Fully update your system (Take a look at the Slackware-Manual for that).
  • Setup a task schedule, "weekly" is a good idea on pointreleases and "-current" (Take a look at the Slackware-Manual for that).

Note, that the notifier-script doesn't replace the old with the new changelog by default and requires you to do so manually. You can change this behaviour by uncommenting the last two lines of the notifier script.

2 - OTHER

  • Use and modify the script how you like.
  • You are free to share this script or a modified version.
  • Learn more about this script and see screenshots of it in action @ cupoflinux.com.
