  64. classic game <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_(1993_video_game)"><em>Doom</em></a>
  65. (under the <a href="https://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html">GNU General
  66. Public License</a>). The game as a whole did not get this treatment, however, which
  67. means that while the <em>program code</em> that powers <em>Doom</em> is free, the actual
  68. <em>content</em> of <em>Doom</em> - graphics, audio, levels, setting and characters - remains
  69. proprietary. The Freedoom project aims to fill this gap and create a complete
  70. <a href="https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html">free and libre</a> first person shooter game.</p></div>
  71. <div class="paragraph"><p>By itself, <em>Freedoom</em> is just the content of a game and must be paired with a
  72. <a href="https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Category:Source_ports"><em>Doom</em>-compatible</a> game engine
  73. to be played: the <a href="download.html">download</a> page lists some
  74. recommended programs.</p></div>

  76. campaigns and one collection of multiplayer deathmatch arenas (<em>FreeDM</em>).</p></div>

  88. <a href="https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Idgames_archive">back catalog</a> containing
  89. thousands of <em>Doom</em> levels and other mods made by fans of the
  90. original game. <em>Freedoom</em> aims to be compatible with these and allows
  91. most to be played without the need to use non-free software. The
  92. video to the right shows a <em>Doom</em> mod running under <em>Freedoom</em>.</p></div>
