  32. .SH NAME
  33. \fBmenu\fR - curses extension for programming menus
  34. .SH SYNOPSIS
  35. \fB#include <menu.h>\fR
  36. .br
  37. .SH DESCRIPTION
  38. The \fBmenu\fR library provides terminal-independent facilities for composing
  39. menu systems on character-cell terminals. The library includes: item routines,
  40. which create and modify menu items; and menu routines, which group items into
  41. menus, display menus on the screen, and handle interaction with the user.
  42. .PP
  43. The \fBmenu\fR library uses the \fBcurses\fR libraries, and a curses
  44. initialization routine such as \fBinitscr\fR must be called before using any of
  45. these functions. To use the \fBmenu\fR library, link with the options
  46. \fB-lmenu -lcurses\fR.
  47. .
  48. .SS Current Default Values for Item Attributes
  49. .
  50. The \fBmenu\fR library maintains a default value for item attributes. You can
  51. get or set this default by calling the appropriate \fBget_\fR or \fBset_\fR
  52. routine with a \fBNULL\fR item pointer. Changing this default with a
  53. \fBset_\fR function affects future item creations, but does not change the
  54. rendering of items already created.
  55. .
  56. .SS Routine Name Index
  57. .
  58. The following table lists each \fBmenu\fR routine and the name of
  59. the manual page on which it is described.

  130. .SH RETURN VALUE
  131. Routines that return pointers return \fBNULL\fR on error. Routines that return
  132. an integer return one of the following error codes:
  133. .TP 5
  134. .B E_OK
  135. The routine succeeded.
  136. .TP 5
  137. .B E_BAD_ARGUMENT
  138. Routine detected an incorrect or out-of-range argument.
  139. .TP 5
  140. .B E_BAD_STATE
  141. Routine was called from an initialization or termination function.
  142. .TP 5
  143. .B E_NO_MATCH
  144. Character failed to match.
  145. .TP 5
  146. .B E_NO_ROOM
  147. Menu is too large for its window.
  148. .TP 5
  149. .B E_NOT_CONNECTED
  150. No items are connected to the menu.
  151. .TP 5
  152. .B E_NOT_POSTED
  153. The menu has not been posted.
  154. .TP 5
  155. .B E_NOT_SELECTABLE
  156. The designated item cannot be selected.
  157. .TP 5
  158. .B E_POSTED
  159. The menu is already posted.
  160. .TP 5
  161. .B E_REQUEST_DENIED
  162. The menu driver could not process the request.
  163. .TP 5
  164. .B E_SYSTEM_ERROR
  165. System error occurred (see \fBerrno\fR).
  166. .TP 5
  167. .B E_UNKNOWN_COMMAND
  168. The menu driver code saw an unknown request code.
  169. .SH SEE ALSO
  170. \fBcurses\fR(3X) and related pages whose names begin "menu_" for detailed
  171. descriptions of the entry points.
  172. .SH NOTES
  173. The header file \fB<menu.h>\fR automatically includes the header files
  174. \fB<curses.h>\fR and \fB<eti.h>\fR.
  175. .PP
  176. In your library list, libmenu.a should be before libncurses.a; that is,
  177. you want to say `-lmenu -lncurses', not the other way around (which would
  178. usually give a link-error).
  179. .SH PORTABILITY
  180. These routines emulate the System V menu library. They were not supported on
  181. Version 7 or BSD versions.
