  51. ITEM *new_item(const char *name, const char *description);
  52. int free_item(ITEM *item);
  53. </PRE>
  54. <H2>DESCRIPTION</H2><PRE>
  55. The function <STRONG>new_item</STRONG> allocates a new item and initializes
  56. it from the <STRONG>name</STRONG> and <STRONG>description</STRONG> pointers. Please notice
  57. that the item stores only the pointers to the name and
  58. description. Those pointers must be valid during the life-
  59. time of the item. So you should be very careful with names
  60. or descriptions allocated on the stack of some routines.
  61. The function <STRONG>free_item</STRONG> de-allocates an item. Please notice
  62. that it is the responsibility of the application to
  63. release the memory for the name or the description of the
  64. item.
  65. </PRE>
  66. <H2>RETURN VALUE</H2><PRE>
  67. The function <STRONG>new_item</STRONG> returns <STRONG>NULL</STRONG> on error. It sets
  68. errno according to the function's failure:
  69. <STRONG>E_BAD_ARGUMENT</STRONG>
  70. Routine detected an incorrect or out-of-range argu-
  71. ment.
  72. <STRONG>E_SYSTEM_ERROR</STRONG>
  73. System error occurred, e.g., malloc failure.
  74. The function <STRONG>free_item</STRONG> returns one of the following:
  75. <STRONG>E_OK</STRONG> The routine succeeded.
  76. <STRONG>E_BAD_ARGUMENT</STRONG>
  77. Routine detected an incorrect or out-of-range argu-
  78. ment.
  79. <STRONG>E_CONNECTED</STRONG>
  80. Item is connected to a menu.
  81. <STRONG>E_SYSTEM_ERROR</STRONG>
  82. System error occurred (see <STRONG>errno</STRONG>).
