Unfortunately, although we have declared the ActivityPub plugin as now being in a alpha state, there are some more things we have to do in GNU social to make the support of this protocol ready to be deployed.
Namely, (OS = OStatus, AP = ActivityPub, TFNM = The Free Network Module)
TFNM: "Automagically" migrate internal remote profiles between different Free Network protocols
Add Group Actor Type in AP
ActorLists: Allow to create collections of Actors and to interact
with them - supports both OS and AP
It's also important to note that this plugin is targeted at GNU social
v2 which is in a dev cycle right now and has its own chunk of pending tasks before reaching an alpha release, namely:
Port PEAR HTTP to Guzzle
Port PEAR DB to PDO_DataObject
General Core Reliability Engineering
Until v2 is released, I would suggest, if you haven't already, updating your instance to either the latest stable release GNU social v1.20.9 or the master branch which is our testing release. Please do not use GNU social's nightly branch in any production instance.

Is the ActivityPub module ready for use? It would be helpful if the plugin's readme file had info about its status. Thanks : )
