I originally mentioned some of this in #197 but, it didn't really fit with that topic so I'll move that bit here.
I imagine this might fit in a footer or last row of a side bar. The "About" page could list it as well. Regenerate every page refresh / every [15][minutes].
Show total number of users currently online. Break it down between not-logged in, logged in, and [hidden]. Maybe also highlight "confirmed" members who've completed some form of a "know your customer" process. Very useful for organization (and "celebrity") types.
tally highest ever amount of users with a date
list + link profiles of registered members
users can opt out of being listed here. This could be a feature for members who have financially contributed to the site.
there could also be an icon or anything to indicate that user is online in the directory.
ability to search / view online members in directory
display online members in Group profile.
notate Admins & Mods especially
notate "verified" members who's gone through a KYC process.

display XMPP online status on user profile?
display number of notices + number of replies to !group in Group member directory.
Top Posters listed in group? Could be per week/month/all time.
most up + down voted poster for group. week/month/all time
(whoever has the most posts & most positive kudos would generally be considered a "Very Important Poster")
For example, phpbb does a nice job with this. Attached a SS of the KDE forums footer displaying stats. Unsure what theme/style they're using.
notate could be any type of indicator. i.e. image: icon, emoji, etc; ascii check mark, background highlight, different font color

List site stats: # of local users, # of notices (each type), Average posts per day for instance, # of replies, and other site info.

I honestly think this aligns well with the ideas aimed for v3. It could be a really nice plugin.
