- <p>Day 00774: Wednesday, 2017 April 19</p>
- </header>
- <p>
- I spent most of the day programming a Minetest mod instead of working on coursework that was due today, and it quickly and unsurprisingly came back to bite me.
- </p>
- <p>
- My <a href="/a/canary.txt">canary</a> still sings the tune of freedom and transparency.

- <h2>Dream journal</h2>
- <p>
- I had a strange dream in which someone cast a spell on me allowing them to control my leg movements.
- I walked around an unfamiliar town, and ended up put under arrest for not knowing who some actor was.
- I got cuffed, but kept walking 'cause I couldn't control my legs.
- I asked one stranger as I passed if they knew where I could get the key and I showed them my wrists.
- They unhelpfully replied that those were cuffs, not keys.
- Thanks.
- Eventually someone told me how to break the spell on my legs, sort of.
- I had a temporary tattoo on my shoulder.
- If it wore off, I'd regain control.
- They seemed oblivious to the fact that you can speed that process, but that hint was enough.
- I rubbed my skin until it'd completely come off in a slightly-sticky mess like temporary tattoos do.
- I regained control of my legs and was about to confront the one who'd put it on me, but then I woke up.

- <h2>University life</h2>
- <p>
- I spent the day loligaging, then finally got on my coursework.
- In a hustle, I completed the <a href="/en/coursework/CS1102/SnakeEyesCount.java.xhtml"><span title="Programming 1">CS 1102</span> assignment</a>, then my <a href="/en/coursework/HIST1421/Forms_of_government_in_ancient_Greece.xhtml"><span title="Greek and Roman Civilization">HIST 1421</span> essay</a>.
- The essay was a total rush job.
- I'm pretty sure that's my worst essay yet.
- I then graded the work of other students and submitted my remaining discussion posts for the week:
- </p>
- <blockquote>
- <p>
- From the sounds of it, ancient Greece wasn't a country, but merely a region.
- Sparta, a city-state, was basically a tiny country.
- Athens was the same.
- They banded together sometimes in times of war, but so do larger countries.
- Sparta was the more militaristic one though, and focused almost exclusively on the art of war and the art of subjugation.
- Because of that, Sparta required military service of all male citizens.
- </p>
- </blockquote>
- <blockquote>
- <p>
- Life in Sparta certainly was simpler.
- There were no choices of what to do with one's life to get in the way, and the dwellings were simple barracks.
- I think it really shows that simpler isn't always better, though it did make them superior on the battlefield.
- Additionally, Spartan women had many more rights than Athenian women, which was better.
- </p>
- </blockquote>
- <blockquote>
- <p>
- Sparta certainly was a dictatorship, especially near the beginning.
- It did get a bit better before it was conquered by Alexander the Great though.
- Sparta's desire for strong warriors went overboard.
- Then even threw babies into a ravine if they weren't strong enough!
- </p>
- </blockquote>
- <p>
- I never even touched the assigned reading for <span title="Programming 1">CS 1102</span> this week.
- I also didn't have time to touch the ungraded quiz before it closed on me.
- At first, I blamed my lack of enthusiasm for coursework this week on my <span title="Programming 1">CS 1102</span> professor telling me not to write so much.
- That's not it though.
- I had this same problem last week, before that even happened.
- What's wrong with me this term?
- Why am I not interested in my studies?
- Why can't I at least keep focus long enough to get my studies out of the way early?
- I'm not really sure why.
- I need to work on improving my focus and willpower this coming week though.
- </p>
- <p>
- One theory of why I can't keep focus might be that I don't like these courses.
- I mean, one's a history course.
- I've never had an interest or an aptitude in history.
- The other is a Java course, and also an almost-beginning-level programming course.
- I want to develop mobile applications at some point, but as a language, I don't like Java even a little.
- As for beginning-level programming courses, I've already taken too many of them.
- I know what I'm doing on a beginning level already, and I like to think I can handle more complex things.
- While the inability to let loose on the learning journal assignments in the programming course certainly isn't helping, it's guaranteed not to be the (sole) cause of my recent lethargy.
- </p>
- <p>
- The reading assignment for the week, should I find time to get back to it, was as follows:
- </p>
- <ul>
- <li>
- <a href="https://docs.oracle.com./javase/tutorial/collections/algorithms/index.html">Lesson: Algorithms (The Java™ Tutorials > Collections)</a>
- </li>
- <li>
- <a href="https://docs.oracle.com./javase/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/flow.html">Control Flow Statements (The Java™ Tutorials > Learning the Java Language > Language Basics)</a>
- </li>
- <li>
- <a href="https://www.youtube.com./watch?v=49qW6dVLJJQ">CS1102 Programming 1 (Java) Unit 2 Lecture 1 - YouTube</a>
- </li>
- <li>
- <a href="http://math.hws.edu./javanotes/c3/index.html">Javanotes 7.0, Chapter 3 -- Programming in the Small II: Control</a>
- </li>
- </ul>
- <p>
- After the rush had subsided, I also submitted my learning journal assignments for <a href=/en/coursework/CS1102/#Unit2" title="Programming 1">CS 1102</a> and <a href="/en/coursework/CS1102/#Unit2" title="Greek and Roman Civilization">HIST 1421</a>.
