-
University life

-

- I spent the day catching up on coursework.
- Everything's done now aside from the learning journal assignments and the final exams.
- Both learning journal entries and one of the final exams *must* be completed tomorrow.
- I'm having trouble on one of the learning journal entries though, as I haven't been able to access the online textbook this week.
- The other learning journal entry is nearly complete, and just can't be quite finished until I take the final exam tomorrow.
- My discussion post for the day was as follows:
-

-

-

- I've been having trouble with the textbook all term.
- Much of the time, it refuses to load, though I eventually get the server to let me connect and complete the reading assignment.
- However, this week, I haven't been able to get the textbook to load at all.
- I eventually had to write up this discussion post as I'd run out of time, but I haven't been able to read the assigned chapters, so the contents of this post may be a bit ... incomplete.
- I apologize for that.
- I'm really hoping I can get the textbook to load by tomorrow, when the learning journal assignment is due.
-

-

- As long as the movie is locked under copyright, the general welfare is *not* being served.
- Copyright is censorship and creates monopolies, both of which are noxious to society.
- With nothing positive to counterbalance the negatives of the movie (the censorship, the monopoly, the paying massive amounts of money to the already-wealthy, et cetera), I see no ethical justification for the creation of the movie.
-

-

- As for arguing *against* the movie, that's much easier.
- As the discussion question mentions, it does cause wealth distribution in the wrong direction; that is, it makes the wealthy actors even more wealthy.
- However, that's not even the worst of it.
- The even-wealthier producer makes a killing on the movie too, and due to noxious copyright laws, this wealth is the product of censorship and a monopoly on the film.
- No one is allowed to make money on the film without the copyright holder's permission, which likely comes with a condition of royalties paid back to said copyright holder (likely the producer), furthering the wealth misdistribution.
- The film isn't allowed to even be incorporated into other cultural works without consent from the copyright holders and likely royalties paid; copyright prevents us from expressing ourselves.
- Being allowed to express ourselves is a basic human right; copyright law is an abomination.
-

-

- Unfortunately, as I haven't been able to complete that part of the reading assignment, I don't know what the star system is, so I can't argue against it.
- Web searches have proven unhelpful, instead showing me info on a different concept, one dealing with stellar bodies.
-

-

- I'm not at all envious of Montana's life.
- My life may not have been the best, but I strongly value my ... well, values.
- I'd rather be unsuccessful than be a drug-dealing murderer.
- I'm an impoverished young adult paying rent to people that have been described by my coworkers as "slum lords".
- I don't have a home Internet connection, I have no television services, and I often have to ride my bike to work in the rain.
- I've just escaped an abusive home life, and am now trying to recover from the damages done by it.
- But you know what?
- My life's pretty sweet.
- I live in a very green (as in lots of trees) area because of all that rain, I can afford to buy small luxuries such as music files, and I get to study at an awesome university with very low tuition.
- (I'm amazed that tuition is only $100 USD per course!)
- I don't have to deal drugs and I don't have to kill anyone.
- I'm a freakin' vegan, I don't like death.
- I'll take what I have now over what Montana had any day.
-

-

-

- Due to the foolish system in place at University of the People, we can't post our other responses until waiting five minutes after our initial post.
- In those five minutes, I got distracted by other coursework, and later thought I'd finished the discussion assignment entirely.
- As such, I failed to actually complete the discussion assignment, which was due today.
