dwm - dynamic window manager

dwm is an extremely fast, small, and dynamic window manager for X.

This repo has various customisations and patches applied. It might furthermore be out of date with the original source.

Included is xsetroot.sh and rcb.sh.

The xsetroot.sh script will add the current time and other information to the dwm status bar. It relies on having other dependencies installed such as mpd/mpc and iwconfig. If you want to use it, put it in your path with execute permissions enabled, then add xsetroot.sh & to your .xinitrc.

Requirements

In order to build dwm you need the Xlib header files.

The customisations in this repo also require that you have libmpdclient installed.

If you're trying to compile this (especially after a fresh install) and you get complains about missing Xft.h, make sure you have libxft installed.

Installation

Edit config.mk to match your local setup (dwm is installed into the ${HOME} namespace by default).

Afterwards enter the following command to build and install dwm (if necessary as root):

make clean && make && make install

If you are going to use the default bluegray color scheme it is highly recommended to also install the bluegray files shipped in the dextra package.

Running dwm

Add the following line to your .xinitrc to start dwm using startx:

exec dwm

In order to connect dwm to a specific display, make sure that the DISPLAY environment variable is set correctly, e.g.:

DISPLAY=foo.bar:1 exec dwm

(This will start dwm on display :1 of the host foo.bar.)

In order to display status info in the bar, you can do something like this in your .xinitrc:

while xsetroot -name "`date` `uptime | sed 's/.*,//'`"
do
    sleep 1
done &
exec dwm

Configuration

The configuration of dwm is done by creating a custom config.h and (re)compiling the source code.
