#3 Add ballast alternatives, inventory and some docs

Here are a few changes that improve the mod somewhat and hopefully uncontroversially from its original incarnation which I have bundled together so as to not be burdensome with several PRs. I would usually not bother to PR changes like READMEs but I did everything in one branch to save hassle.
