  55. <H2>DESCRIPTION</H2><PRE>
  56. These functions are extensions to the curses library which
  57. do not fit easily into other categories.
  58. Use <EM>curses</EM><STRONG>_</STRONG><EM>version()</EM> to get the version number, including
  59. patch level of the library, e.g., <STRONG>5.0.19991023</STRONG>
  60. The <EM>use</EM><STRONG>_</STRONG><EM>extended</EM><STRONG>_</STRONG><EM>names()</EM> function controls whether the
  61. calling application is able to use user-defined or non-
  62. standard names which may be compiled into the terminfo
  63. description, i.e., via the terminfo or termcap interfaces.
  64. Normally these names are available for use, since the
  65. essential decision is made by using the <STRONG>-x</STRONG> option of <STRONG>tic</STRONG>
  66. to compile extended terminal definitions. However you can
  67. disable this feature to ensure compatibility with other
  68. implementations of curses.
  69. </PRE>
  70. <H2>PORTABILITY</H2><PRE>
  71. These routines are specific to ncurses. They were not
  72. supported on Version 7, BSD or System V implementations.
  73. It is recommended that any code depending on them be con-
  74. ditioned using NCURSES_VERSION.
