Dev-Config

Installing Ubuntu MATE

  1. Download the Ubuntu MATE iso from the MATE download page.
  2. Burn the iso to a usb using:
    • Windows : rufus
    • MATE : Disks application
  3. Boot into the image on the usb and choose to install Ubuntu MATE
    • If manually sizing partitions:
      • Be sure to create a partition of at least a 10MB for the boot thingy.
      • Create at partition of at least 32GB and use that partition as the location of /.
      • Swap partition isn't necessary but may be useful. See itsfoss.com for swap partition size.
  4. Once MATE is installed and boots for the first time click yes to download all updates (this may take a while).
  5. sudo apt-get update to be safe.
  6. Download any missing drivers (often display/graphics-card drivers)
    • FUTURE ME!!! THIS IS A REMINDER TO DOWNLOAD THE DRIVER FOR YOUR DESKTOP GRAPHICS CARD BECAUSE YOU FORGET TO DO IT EVERY TIME AND THEN WONDER WHY YOUR DISPLAY CAN NEVER BE DETECTED.
    • For your GTX 1070 the command is sudo apt-get install nvidia-367
  7. Download any other necessary software.
    • Run sudo ./setup/do-download.sh from the dev-config directory to install as much software as possible from the command line.
  8. Move files/scripts to their locations.
    • Run sudo ./setup/do-move.sh from the dev-config directory.
  9. Update MATE Terminal settings.
    • Open MATE Terminal.
    • Edit --> Profile Preferences
      • Uncheck the terminal bell option.
      • Set scrolling to 2048 lines.
    • Edit --> Keyboard Shortcuts
      • Disable everything except:
        • Copy : Shift+Ctrl+C
        • Paste : Shift+Ctrl+V
        • Full Screen : Shift+Ctrl+F11
        • Hide and Show menubar : Shift+Ctrl+F12
        • Zoom In : Ctrl++
        • Zoom Out : Ctrl+_
  10. Change CAPS LOCK to ESC
    • Preferences --> hardware --> keyboard --> Select US Keyboard --> Options Caps Lock Key Behavior --> Make Caps Lock and additional ESC
